| SEATTLE, Wa, July 25, 2000 -
Punch Networks Corporation, a pioneer in Web-based file storage and collaboration services, today launched Punch WebGroups 2.5 from its Web site, www.punchwebgroups.com. The new version, which has been optimized for Microsoft's IE 5.01 browser, includes an XML (Extensible Markup Language) tree, a Web-based calendar and document print/deliver services designed to make the WebGroups service a single point of access for important user information.
"As we move toward a more comprehensive upgrade later this fall we wanted to address some of the feedback we've received from our users," said Punch Networks' president and CEO. "In addition to improving the performance of the service, we've partnered with leading providers like eCal™ and NowDocs.com™ to round out our suite of business productivity and collaborative tools."
Punch WebGroups is a secure Web file storage and collaboration service, which gives users anytime, anywhere access to personal and shared files. WebGroups goes beyond simple file storage, and includes version tracking, audit trails, access controls and change notification. Importantly, Punch's patented technology automatically notifies users when shared files change or are updated, then sends only the changes between file versions, rather than the whole file, ensuring the fastest possible uploads and downloads.
What's new in 2.5?
There are three significant new features in WebGroups 2.5.
- XML-based folder/file structure: The service has been optimized for users with Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 5 browsers. Those users will experience enhanced speed and performance from the new XML-based file tree. This new approach only displays the part of the user's file tree that he or she requests, rather than refreshing the entire tree at once.
- Calendar: Punch has partnered with eCal, the leading Internet calendar provider, to offer users an integrated calendar. Powered by eCal, the WebGroups calendar enhances the collaboration tools already in WebGroups. Using the calendar feature, users can: schedule meetings, send and receive email, schedule tasks, and set reminders. WebGroups users do not need to set up a separate account to use the calendar - they simply access it after they've logged into their WebGroups account.
- Print/Delivery Service: Punch has partnered with NowDocs.com to provide a co-branded version of the NowDocs.com service that gives users a quick and easy way to print, copy, bind and deliver documents anywhere in the United States and in Europe in less than two hours. WebGroups users can click on a link to the co-branded service from within the WebGroups service.
Punch WebGroups 2.5 also includes infrastructure enhancements to allow for a series of planned platform extensions, including a Windows plug-in and wireless access support. Punch will make these new products available in beta form in the coming weeks.
