| SEATTLE, Wa, August 21, 2000 -
Punch Networks Corp. announced the availability of a beta of Punch WebGroups for Wireless, the latest in a series of platform extensions of its Web-based file collaboration service, Punch WebGroups. Users can activate wireless access on their existing account by pointing their Web browser to Punch's Web site at http://www.punchnetworks.com/product/wireless.html. The service is available for users of any Web-enabled cellular/PCS network.
Perhaps the most useful feature of the wireless version of WebGroups is the ability it gives users to receive file update notifications in near real time on their Web-phone. With WebGroups for Wireless, users are alerted via their phone when new files are published or existing files are updated, and can follow a link in the notification to display more information about the file.
In addition to update notifications, users can also access and interact with almost all of the other document management features of Punch WebGroups normally accessible from any standard Web browser via www.punchnetworks.com. They can view their WebGroups account for more information about the update. They can read the description of the file and track the versions. They can use the audit trail capability to see who else has downloaded the file. If they wish to send the document to another user, they can simply add that user to the WebGroup. The user will automatically receive an email with a hyperlink, a password and ID that will give him or her secure access to the file, via their browser, on Punch's server.
"Our mission has always been to simplify and improve communication and collaboration for active business people," said Punch Networks' President and CEO. "There's no doubt that wireless devices are playing an increasingly important role in the way people work. By offering a robust collaboration service on these newer platforms, we demonstrate our commitment to provide services that work the way our customers work. Whether it's a PC, a cellular phone, a PDA, or a TV set-top box, Punch will continue to enable secure and ubiquitous access to document and collaboration services."
Punch's patented technology makes a wireless future for file collaboration more feasible. Punch WebGroups intelligently and automatically examines files at the binary level, identifies only the parts of files that change, then sends only these changes across the Web, making uploads and downloads of versions quick and efficient. WebGroups is well suited for mobile users or small businesses, which are typically connected to the Web via a slow link. But its importance and relevance increase with wireless devices, which are amongst the most bandwidth-constrained tools on the market.
"We believe the true power of wireless applications resides in the ability to interact with not only your data, but also your colleagues," said David Campbell, Punch Networks' Chairman and founder. "We are proud to offer our customers one of the first collaborative applications for the wireless Web."
